  • He's got good looks and a fine voice, but Keith Harling's main talent is songwriting. His debut WRITE IT IN STONE includes six of his own compositions--unusual for a new country artist. But Harling proves himself to be a clever writer with a deft, often humorous touch. In "There Goes the Neighborhood," an inattentive husband, dismayed by the fact that the perfect hubby has moved in next door, complains, "A dozen roses and he loves her cat/Now she'll be wantin' me to act like that." In the title track, the singer ponders the permanence of his relationship by asking his lover, "Should I pencil you in/Or write it in stone?" And the catchy "Papa Bear" puts a grown-up twist on the old children's story, i.e.: "Who's been sleeping in Papa Bear's bed?"
  • Elsewhere, Harling sounds most comfortable on traditional numbers like "Afterthoughts." He even tackles "I Never Go Around Mirrors," the classic Lefty Frizzell weeper later recorded by Keith Whitley. Though Harling's voice is no match for those two great stylists, he acquits himself admirably. This debut suggests good things to come from an emerging artist.
