  • Blues rock singer and guitarist Kelly Joe Phelps followed 2003's full-band effort, SLINGSHOT PROFESSIONALS, with a 2005 live solo album called TAP THE RED CANE WHIRLWIND. Released the following year, TUNESMITH RETROFIT sounds like a meeting ground between the musical complexity of the first and the stark emotional honesty of the second. Returning to a full-band format but severely limiting the number of one-shot guests, these 12 songs have a bracing live-in-the-studio sound that enhances Phelps's trademark lap steel playing. Pedal steel, old-fashioned keyboards like melodica and a circus-like pump organ, fiddle, and drums provide the backing for songs like "Scapegoat" and "The Anvil." The overall effect recalls the first couple of albums by The Band.
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (p.139) - "Phelps' musicianship remains impeccable, and his tunes are immaculate and tasteful..." -- Grade: B+

No Depression (p.127) - "Phelps writes snapshot vignettes born of short-story traditions and delivers them in sturdy acoustic settings drawn from folk, free jazz, and country blues."
