Since his first album, Loudon Wainwright has made a practice of examining every wrinkle and fold in his psyche. So it comes as no surprise that he named this fine and understated album THERAPY. This is a winning set of songs with deft accompaniment provided by a small circle of regular cohorts including Richard Thompson, Chaim Tannenbaum, Danny Thompson, and B.J. Cole. The title song mixes his ever-present wit with biting observations, both about himself and others. He's again distilled a song's signature line into a set of initials for its title, "T.S.D.H.A.V.," which stands for "this song don't have a video" (his FAME AND WEALTH album had the wonderful "IDTTYWLM"--"I don't think that your wife likes me"). "Thanksgiving" is the gem of this album. The song is wrapped in a gorgeous blanket of melancholy--with Thompson on guitar and Cole on pedal steel--as Wainwright depicts the annual family gathering, keenly aware of the years that have fallen away.
