Though he first came to the attention of many fans as Ashlee Simpson's boyfriend, Ryan Cabrera slugged it out on the Texas club scene for several years before being discovered by Ashlee and sister Jessica's manager dad, Joe Simpson. This experience is evident in Cabrera's polished delivery, which combines the smooth, youthful timbre characteristic of boy-band singing with a lump-in-the-throat melancholy reminiscent of 1980s New Romantics Simon LeBon (Duran Duran) and Jim Kerr (Simple Minds).
TAKE IT ALL AWAY was co-produced by John Rzeznik, and often traffics in a lush brand of rock balladry similar to that of Rzeznik's band, the Goo Goo Dolls. "Let's Take Our Time" kicks off with a Paul McCartney-style pumping quarter-note rhythm, while "Blind Sight" recalls the soaring drama of Jeff Buckley. Elsewhere, the album mixes '80s-style orchestral pop with dance beats and a rough-and-ready rock rhythm section. An accomplished debut, TAKE IT ALL AWAY reveals an artist poised to transcend his teen-pop associations.
