Performer Notes
  • Personnel includes: Little Milton (guitar, vocals), Ike Turner (piano), C.W. Tate (saxophone).
  • Though Little Milton wouldn't alight on his signature sound--a fusion of blues and soul--until his tenure with Chess Records, his earliest sides, recorded at Sun, are among his most exciting and vital. Perhaps it was the experimental ethos of Sam Phillips's famous label that encouraged Milton's eclecticism, but Milton brings divergent influences to these songs with a freshness that is admirable--and often exhilarating. At times, as on the opener, "Beggin' My Baby," Milton takes a cue from Fats Domino (Ike Turner's piano is high in the mix); on other tracks, he dips into searing Elmore James-style blues ("Lookin' for My Baby") and straightforward crooning ("If You Love Me Baby").
  • In addition to the singles, THE SUN MASTERS also includes seven unissued masters. "I Love My Baby" is a chugging roadhouse blues and "Oo Wee, Wee Baby," while based on a blues structure, is cast as a polished, strolling tune. Milton draws on everything from jump blues to New Orleans R&B to hillbilly-influenced rock & roll here, but his charisma as a singer and--especially--his amazingly raw, electric leads, pull it all together, placing these recordings among the best of his career.
Professional Reviews
Spin - "..Little Milton Campbell is a guitar-stinging, grit'n'honey- throated history of the post-war blues.."

Goldmine - Highly Recommended - "..blues guitar at it's gloriously distorted finest.."
