  • Though they often get overlooked in the holiday blitz of Bing Crosby's "White Christmas," Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," and the Beach Boys' "Little Saint Nick," there are few holiday treasures more satisfying than traditional Christmas carols. Pete Seeger's 1967 collection of yuletide traditionals, simply titled TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS CAROLS, is one of the best. Seeger sings these tunes alone, accompanying himself on banjo and guitar. Some of them are hundreds of years old, and they're rendered with grace and reverence. From familiar tunes like "The First Noel" and "What Child Is This?" to more obscure carols like "Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming" and "12 Gates to the City," Seeger's choices are exquisite. The two versions--vocal and instrumental--of the lovely "Carol of the Beasts" are as beautiful as holiday sings get.
Professional Reviews
Sing Out! (11-12/94-1/95, p.126) - "...The arrangements are simple and full of personality. No frills, just Pete and his banjo; tender and intimate, fresh and not all out-of-date."
