  • After some three decades as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, occasional actor, and leader of one of America's great rock bands, the Heartbreakers, Tom Petty turned his hand to being a radio DJ, hosting his own Buried Treasure show on XM Radio beginning in 2005, in which he played gems, obscurities, and rarities from his own record collection. This set collects 30 of those tracks, which feature a surprising, or maybe not surprising, amount of blues from artists like Champion Jack Dupree, Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed, and Elmore James, to name a few, but then there's Link Wray here too, and Petty's sharp ear for a good song and a solid recording is everywhere evident. Even without the Petty angle, this makes a great archival playlist. ~ Steve Leggett
