  • Perverse attempts to expand on the success Jesus Jones enjoyed with Doubt, not only commercially but artistically as well. This is one of the first albums to be recorded entirely through a computer. Musically, Perverse is a synthesis of techno/rave dance music with traditional pop/rock songs and structures; it's an ambitious album that works sporadically. Bandleader Mike Edwards lost sight of most of the pop-song sensibility that made "Right Here, Right Now" an across-the-boards smash. Too often, the hooks are submerged beneath layers of computerized noise and aren't strong enough to pull themselves out. When Perverse clicks, Jesus Jones gives the listener an idea of how enjoyable a successful marriage of techno and rock could be. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (2/18/93, p.60) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good - "...continues to break ground in the new genre of rave-meets-rock bands...it's amazing to hear a record with the first death-metal rave song...provocative..."

Q (2/93, p.82) - 3 Stars - Good - "...An album of imperious precision, it has absolutely no ambition to charm--just like its predecessor which was admirable, unlovely and bought by 2 million souls. Intensely structured, cold, hi-tech savagery..."

Alternative Press (3/93, p.52) - "...worshippers will find Jesus as hard-edged as ever, adding even more industrial effects to his psychedelic swirl...Jesus Jones is the lost link between Ministry's WITH SYMPATHY and TWITCH..."
