  • The television series NEW YORK UNDERCOVER focuses predominantly on street issues that reflect the unrest of urban communities, and presents itself as a primary source of entertainment for the inner-city population. Its soundtrack unites urban-contemporary artists in an attempt to spread the vibe of the Big Apple. By grasping the attention of the younger generation through popular music, the show has proven to be a viable channel of communication about pertinent matters.
  • Neither too hard nor too smooth, the music is mostly the offspring of the Uptown record label. The bounce of Little Shawn's "Dom Perignon" and Lost Boyz's "Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz" are the compilation's main links to the hip-hop community--though R&B flavors like Guy's "Tell Me What You Like" and Monifah's "I Miss You" (featuring Heavy D.), both of which sport party-type production, also pay hommage to the genre. The soundtrack gives Gladys Knight and Mavis Staples a chance to mix it up with modern R&B artists, while Mary J. Blige reminisces about the old school with a cover of Aretha Franklin's classic "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman."
  • Enhanced by the unique talents of James Mtume, the theme to this hot '90s TV drama is more laid-back, and represents the program's content better than any other track. But with a little bit of the old, a lot of the new, and some unique combinations of the two, NEW YORK UNDERCOVER successfully compiles a variety of related musical styles.
