  • Warren Zevon's first release on the Artemis label, LIFE'LL KILL YA, stripped down his sound to bare bones, exposing in sharp relief his sardonic wit and undeniable songcraft. The follow-up MY RIDE'S HERE manages to return to the forceful, full-band rock sound of Zevon's salad days while keeping the quirky songwriting knack intact. Whether Zevon is singing about the violent exploits of a hockey player "Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song)" or musing about Albert Einstein's way with the ladies ("Genius"), his knack for combining decidedly original (some might go so far as to say odd) subject matter with visceral rock riffs and catchy pop hooks remains intact. Zevon hasn't made the upper decks of the charts since the days of "Werewolves of London," and MY RIDE'S HERE probably won't change that fact, but that's just further proof of these songs' inherent aesthetic worth. Long may Warren run.

Rolling Stone (6/6/02, p.78) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...MY RIDE'S HERE makes 2 crucial improvements on [his] honorable 2000 release LIFE'LL KILL YA. First, it rocks harder without stinting the musicianly colors...Second, it doesn't dwell much on his love life..."

Entertainment Weekly (5/31/02, p.108) - "...Zevon squeezes 10 tough songs out of collaborations with journalists, plus a poet who wrote six lines that stand as the best review Bob Dylan's OH MERCY ever got..." - Rating: A-

Uncut (1/03, p.95) - Ranked #15 in Uncut's "100 Best Albums of the Year" - "...MY RIDE'S HERE is a superb collection of Zevon's literate style..."

Uncut (3/04, p.115) - 4 stars out of 5 - "The mordant humour continued on MY RIDE'S HERE..."

Mojo (Publisher) (7/02, p.102) - "...For all his sour wit Zevon remains a musical craftsman who's happy to leave the lyrics to others..."
