  • If Yo-Yo-Ma wanted to do 10 minutes of stand-up comedy in a concert, you'd probably forgive him. Similarly, you'll probably forgive Leo Kottke for indulging his fondness for novelty vocals and other weirdness on the otherwise excellent MY FATHER'S FACE. A less understanding soul would scratch his head in wonder at the inclusion of "Everybody Lies" and "Why Can't You Fix My Car," to name just two of the tongue-in-cheek leg-pulling trifles. But the good stuff is, as usual, superb.
  • The opener, "Times Twelve," features Kottke's 12-string on an Afro-pop 12/8 groove--hence the title. The Spanish-tinged "BJ," a haunting waltz for solo six-string guitar, is reminiscent of the contemporary classical guitar repertoire. "My Aunt Francis" is all angles and blind alleys, while "William Powell" is a grits-fueled bossa nova, a Brazilian-styled hoedown. Kottke recites some more of his loony doggerel on "Jack Gets Up." At least we can be grateful that he doesn't go all sensitive when he sings--he'd rather be ornery.
