My Dear Old Southern Home is one of Doc Watson's best latter-day records, boasting an affectionate collection of old time and traditional country songs. Watson pay attention to the standards by the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers, but he also digs deep into the old timey songbook and comes up with gems from more obscure acts like the Delmore Brothers and Bonnie Dodd. For some fans, My Dear Old Southern Home will seem like it lacks Watson's signature guitar work, but it's a wondeful, warm listen. ~ Thom Owens
