Performer Notes
  • Loose Fur: Glenn Kotche, Jim O'Rourke, Jeff Tweedy.
  • An informal trio composed of three like-minded musicians, Loose Fur combines the talents of Wilco's singer and guitarist, Jeff Tweedy, its drummer, Glenn Kotche, and the peripatetic musician Jim O'Rourke. The result, revealed in the project's debut, is a selection of half-a-dozen atmospheric songs that vary from the folksy "Racoonists" to the experimental pop of "Scrotales," with the dappled fingerpicking of the title track especially reminiscent of the band's fellow Midwestern experimenters Pullman.

Rolling Stone (2/6/03, p.60) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Full of found sounds and atmospheric haziness but infused with a whimsical, free-flowing vibe you'd expect from laid-back indie-rockers just doing their thing....Plenty of good ideas here..."

Entertainment Weekly (2/7/03, p.82) - "...It's art rock in overalls....Some nice moments..." - Rating: B

Uncut (2/03, p.82) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...The effect is brilliant. You can look at it two ways: as a document of shifting tensions between songform and skronk....Or as the discovery of the common ground between songwriters and experimentalists..."

Magnet (1/03, p.92) - "...Lazily brilliant, LOOSE FUR should silence anyone who still views Wilco's arty chops as dilettante-ish..."

The Wire (1/03, pp.68-9) - "...[The] hardest rockin' of his Drag City/Domino release....Tweedy is wistful and romantic, his closed-lipped voice whispering of seasons and lovers and country paths. By contrast, O'Rourke is witty and urbane..."

Mojo (Publisher) (3/03, p.103) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Endearing..."
