Performer Notes
  • Producers: John Wood, Loudon Wainwright III.
  • Recorded live at Birmingham Town Hall, Birmingham, England; The New Vic, London, England; The Apollo, Glasgow, Scotland; Manchester Opera House, Manchester, England in Autumn, 1976; McCabes Guitar Shop, Los Angeles, California in October 1978.
  • Loudon Wainwright entered the '80s with this excellent live set. Recorded in England from 1976 to 1978, A LIVE ONE is a perfect look at his work from the early '70s onward. He opens with one of his earliest and most enduring numbers, "Motel Blues." Wainwright is at his best when playing solo before appreciative audiences who know his his work, as is the case here. After his surprise hit "Dead Skunk" (not included here), he was pressured by the record company to come up with another. Toward that end, his work was often fashioned with production flourishes that smothered the simplicity at the music's heart. Here, unadorned, all the songs shine--from loudmouth wise-guy numbers like "Down Drinking at the Bar," to delicate autobiographical explorations such as "School Days." This is a perfect introduction into Wainwright's work, as is his subsequent live release from 1993, CAREER MOVES.
