  • Former lead singer of the traditionalist Irish folk band De Danann, Maura O'Connell never quite fit in the constraints of pure Celtic folk music. Even on this, her solo debut and most recognizably Celtic album, O'Connell expands her musical horizons enough to include elements of English folk, American country, even pop and jazz into her own music. An exquisite interpretive singer, O'Connell sings every one of these tracks with the assurance of an author, as if she's revealing her own personal truths, even on traditional songs like "The Isle of Malachy" and "The Water Is Wide." Elsewhere, stunning reinterpretations of Bela Fleck's "Love's Old Sweet Song"--Fleck returned the compliment by producing O'Connell's next album, 1989's HELPLESS HEART--and Paul McCartney's "I Will" define her newfound artistic parameters. Where many debuts are tentative affairs, JUST IN TIME is a stunning, self-assured work that connects on every level.
