Performer Notes
  • Personnel: David Parsons (keyboards); David Parson (keyboards).
  • Recording information: David Parsons Studio, Wellington, New Zealand.
  • Photographer: Mike Fuller.
  • Parsons has found his work appended to the Californian "New Age" movements of the '80s that also inextricably (and unfortunately) linked such folks as Steve Roach and Eberhard Schoener. Forgetting that Parsons is a native New Zealander, and that Schoener is German, the only thing these artists have in common- aside from numerous stylistic similarities-is their love of expansive landscapes and far-flung cultures and their status as one-time labelmates on Celestial Harmonies, the home to HIMALAYA.
  • Possessed of a keen textural eye and the ability to make real majestic topographies, Parsons is a superb synthesist and composer. Created as a sonic paean to that exotic and mysterious mountain range, HIMALAYA merges Tibetan gong sounds and the rich ancestry of ancient Buddhist concepts with the diamond-bright sheen of modern synthesizers and electronics. This recording's six tracks are all fairly lengthy, as Parsons allows ample room for his gigantic synth chords to breathe and glow. Far from ambient, this is meditative music in the most intelligent sense, surfeited with profound beauty and an elegiac touch-space music brought down to Earth, yet deep enough to get lost in.
