Performer Notes
  • Full title: Gwine Dig A Hole To Put The Devil In: Library Of Congress Vol. 2.
  • Library of Congress recordings from the late '30s.
  • Compilation producers: Kip Lornell, Charles K. Wolfe.
  • Includes liner notes by Kip Lornell.
  • Personnel: Lead Belly (vocals, guitar).
  • Between 1934 and 1942, Leadbelly made numerous trips to the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. to record his music. This is the second of six volumes collecting the powerful music recorded in those sessions, simply and directly. Leadbelly possessed a powerful voice and the creative fervor to fashion his observations and heartfelt passions into riveting songs. The shadow he cast over the rest of the 20th century is enormous--whether conscious of his influence or not, nearly all folk and blues singers can trace their musical lineage back to him. Additionally, he wrote songs that have become part of our cultural heritage, like "C.C. Rider" and "The Bourgeois Blues," both of which are included here. Some of the lesser-known compositions featured here prove to be incredible demonstrations of his talents, like the acappella-tinged "Old Rattler."
