Performer Notes
  • Not long before he died, Odom made the album of his life with a combo called the Gold Tops, who provided precisely the right backing to properly spotlight his booming voice. A few overdone standards -- "Rock Me Baby," "Woke Up This Morning," "Next Time You See Me" -- intrude a bit, but Odom's own "Bad Feelin'," "Why Did You Leave Me," and "Come to Me" make impassioned amends. Steve Freund, best-known for his long stint with Sunnyland Slim, contributes stellar lead guitar. ~ Bill Dahl
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (6/24/93, p.81) - 3 Stars - Good - "...captures the gritty excitement of a live blues-bar set even though it's a studio session.... This is music from deep in the trenches, played by one of the many unsung, hard-hitting bands that help keep the blues so vital, even when it's not in vogue..."

JazzTimes (Jan.-Feb./93, p.86) - "...a terrific legacy..."

Dirty Linen (Apr/May 93, p.68) - "...good enough to rank among the classics of blues music...[his bandmates] provide superb support and a solid base for some of the best blues singing you're likely to hear..."

Living Blues (Jan/Feb 93, p.65) - "...intensely agonized, at times self-deprecating, hankie-daubing delivery and pleading, gut-wrenching lyrical codas..."
