Performer Notes
  • Tiny Tim With Brave Combo: Tiny Tim (vocals); Carl Finch (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Jeffrey Barnes (vocals, woodwinds); Bubba Hernandez (vocals, bass); Danny O'Brien (trumpet); Mitch Marine (drums); Joe Cripps (percussion).
  • Additional personnel: Miss Stephanie, Bucks Burnett (vocals); Paul Averitt (guitar, banjo, bass).
  • Recorded at Inside Track Studios, Denton, Texas between 1988 and 1993. Includes liner notes by Bucks Burnett, Carl Finch and Brave Combo.
  • Released just a year before Tiny Tim's death, GIRL is one of his finest albums. It is every bit the equal of GOD BLESS TINY TIM, which put him on the map in the '60s. Brave Combo was a perfect choice to accompany him--they never stooped to rote recitations of the covers that comprise this work. The version of the Beatles' "Girl" is a fresh and worthy take on the song. Equally stunning is "Bye Bye Blackbird," a tune that many people would assume has been played enough already on Earth-not so! Other highlights include "Over The Rainbow," the turn-of-the-century topical number "Sly Cigarette," "New York, New York," and Goffin and King's "I Want To Stay Here." Tiny Tim's falsetto makes a few appearances, but he also enjoys emoting in the lower- and mid-registers as well. This album joyously celebrates highlights of American 20th-Century song.
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (3/22/96, p.74) - "...Both silly and strangely moving, Tim's unmistakably loopy warble makes this a must for any party tape."

- Rating: B

Dirty Linen (6-7/96, p.81) - "...A melodic mixture of popular music....GIRL is perfect listening pleasure..."

Musician (7/96, p.89) - "...revives Tiny Tim not as a campy nostalgia piece but as a serious, quirky, and seriously quirky artist....the album works best when the gang plays it straight and lets [his] natural humor emerge....a bravura performance..."

The Beat (V.15 #3 1996, p.27) - "...GIRL evokes the experience of huddling in the orange tube-filament glow of a dozen or so Crosley first-generation radios, each tuned to a different musical cavalcade....[Brave Combo are] driven by a level of madness surpassing Syd Barrett, Oscar Levant, Brian Wilson and Sheila Chandra combined."
