  • GERMAN AFTERNOONS is one of many Prine albums that warrants more attention than it got upon its release. Long removed from the major label grind, Prine has been releasing records on his own Oh Boy Records for the bulk of his career--a decision that has proven artistically fruitful. While he generally has not received the publicity a major label usually provides, Prine has been free to make music on entirely his own terms.
  • GERMAN AFTERNOONS bears at least one classic Prine addition, the lilting "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness." The pinpointing of love's inaccessibility with such a pivotal metaphor is trademark Prine: succinct and deceptively simple. That he can pull it off without succumbing to bitterness or cynical distance has long been one of Prine's greatest attributes. GERMAN AFTERNOONS quietly reaffirms his status as one of the country's finest songwriters.
Professional Reviews
Q (7/93, p.111) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...11 gems of old-timey fiddle, pedal and mandolin half-cloaking a sharp ear for contemporary detail and a poet's eye for paradox...Balm for the battered heart and bruised soul, John Prine should be available on prescription..."
