Performer Notes
  • Personnl includes: Loudon Wainwright III (vocals, guitar); Richard Thompson (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin); Myles chase (piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Mark Hardwick (piano); John Miller (bass); Luther Rix (drums, percussion).
  • Recorded in 1982.
  • FAME AND WEALTH is a quietly winning set by Loudon Wainwright III. The album marked a return to the studio for Wainwright after he revived his career with the concert recording, A LIVE ONE. He shines on both his familiar fronts: "The Grammy Song" is humorous in a tongue-in-cheek way, as he imagines himself receiving the coveted award, while "April Fools Day Morn" is a poetic and cathartic autobiographical piece, rich with delicious melancholy for the years already falling away. The latter of these two songs addresses a subject that Wainwright has visited and revisited perhaps more than any other songwriter of his generation.
  • The songs on FAME AND WEALTH are sparsely arranged--many only feature his own guitar. This is an album with plentiful highlights, including "Five Years Old," another song that finds Wainwright as the absent father trying to keep a meaningful connection with his children, and "IDTTYWLM," which actually stands for "I don't think that your wife likes me."
