Product Description
Product Details
Performer Notes
  • Personnel includes: Otis Spann (vocals, piano); Lucille Spann (vocals); Muddy Waters (guitar).
  • Recorded live in New York in 1966 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl.
  • Originally released as 2 separate LPs.
  • Both of the great Chicago pianist's albums for ABC-BluesWay, characterized with rippling piano and ruminative vocals. Backed in style by his mates in the Muddy Waters band (including the man himself), Spann responds to a studio full of people on "Popcorn Man," "Steel Mill Blues," and "Nobody Knows Chicago like I Do." Spann's 1967 encore LP united him in the studio with wife Lucille for several vocals. ~ Bill Dahl
Professional Reviews
Down Beat (8/95, p.55) - 4.5 Stars - Very Good/Excellent - "...his smooth but tense singing style and his exuberance on the 88 keys produced the precise shadings of emotion vital to first-rate Chicago blues..."

Musician (9/95, p.90) - "...Spann gave Muddy [Waters]'s Delta blues the sound of the city. His solo career was ill-fated...but as this reissue of his Bluesway output shows, he was a dynamic artist in his own right. The live set is a real gem..."

Sing Out! (8-10/95, p.137) - "...Spann...had the vocal power, personality and presence required of good band leaders: It's our loss that [he never]...spent much time up front..."
