  • Samples include "Space" (as performed by Galt McDermot).
  • Busta Rhymes has continuously rocked the hip-hop nation with his unpredictably wild style, first as one of the Leaders Of The New School, and now on his much-anticipated solo debut, THE COMING. Part of an elite group of outrageous MCs whose styles trample over rhythmic limitations (Biz Markie, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Akinyele, Redman, etc.), Busta Rhymes has created a trademark flow that accents his animated image.
  • THE COMING is drawn around an end-of-the-world theme, with its repeated emphasis on "there's...only [being] five years left" (foreshadowing "the coming" of the millenium). Musically, the album marks the return of the new school sound of hip-hop. "Keep It Movin'," which reunites the Leaders, is a flashback to the early '90s, when rap music was based on exceptional lyrical skills, original concepts, and tracks that stacked samples every which way. Another new school pioneer, Q-Tip makes his guest appearence on "Ill Vibe," where the two MCs trade silly, free-flowing quips. And the single, "Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check" illustrates Busta's unique talent for coming up with catchy tracks that retain an inherent toughness even as they cross over. THE COMING adds to his contributions to hip-hop and still manages to "bring the ruckus to all you..."

Q (7/96, pp.122-123) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...the beats retain the attention....`Keep It Movin''...sneaks the laurels, as Rhymes is goaded to greater efforts against an apocalyptic snare smack."

Vibe (5/96, p.112) - "...THE COMING'S strongest songs are wrought with old-school energy-and occasionally, a chunk of the chip on Busta's shoulder....ceaseless, melodious, thumping music....this album should give sucka MCs cause to pause..."

The Source (5/96, p.69) - 4 Mics (out of 5) - "...THE COMING is a return to the time when hip-hop records were still fun....So while Busta made his name as a leader of the New School, he actually represents Old School values: having a good time, staying positive and seeing hip-hop as an unlimited form of expression, not just as a tool to make loot."

Melody Maker (6/1/96, p.42) - "...apocalyptic rumblings, beats stacked up to the f***ing ceiling, weirdoid loops that should detonate the heads of all those unsuspecting "Woo Hah!" fans 4 eva....The East Coast's first star at last. Best rhyme: `YAA YAA YAA/YA YAA.' Obviously..."

Rap Pages (5/96, p.29) - 8 (out of 10) - "...Should Busta's lyrical prophesies be correct, and there are only four years left before the end of the world, THE COMING is the essential music for eternal damnation..."
