Trombonist Josh Roseman has worked with everyone from Don Byron to Charlie Hunter, developing the chops and sensibility that would eventually lead to his solo debut CHERRY. Herein, Roseman tosses conservative notions of jazz repertoire straight out the window. Joined by a stellar cast of co-conspirators that includes such downtown jazz luminaries as Joey Baron, Ben Monder, and in one of his last recordings, the late Lester Bowie, Roseman mixes some quirky original tunes with unique deconstructions of the pop/rock songbook. "If I Fell" gives the listener some idea of what the Beatles might have sounded like if they'd done their apprenticeship at the Knitting Factory instead of the Cavern Club. Nirvana's grunge anthem becomes a funky, soul-jazz workout brimming with hard-hitting grooves and Roseman's own assertive trombone declarations.
While all this is done with enough looseness and light-hearted to keep anyone from taking things to seriously, this is no novelty album. Roseman's own tunes are invigorating slices of modern jazz, a trio of Sun Ra covers feel right at home, and if you're not paying strict attention, some of the pop material might just pass for some left-field creation of the downtown cognoscenti who enliven CHERRY so effectively.
