Mix one part Blowfly, one part Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and a dash of Swamp Dogg, chase it with some gritty, greasy guitars, and you've got the basic formula for eccentric R&B veteran Andre Williams's latter-day work. CAN YOU DEAL WITH IT? follows that recipe (still too unpredictable to ever be called a formula), as funk, '50s R&B, and garage rock collide in a sonic kaleidoscope of dirty, sweaty strangeness. Lyrically, Williams has long been fond of leaping wholeheartedly into life's seedy underbelly, and some of the tunes here find the septuagenarian matching his sonic sleaze with themes of sex, drugs, and general unwholesomeness that are somehow made endearing by his irresistibly odd charisma.
