Personnel includes: Dick Cary (trumpet); Bob Wilber (soprano saxophone); Tommy Newsom (tenor saxophone); Bob Havens (trombone); Ross Tompkins, Ralph Sutton (piano); Ted Eston (drums).
Recorded in 1981.
Although he is best remembered as a pianist, Dick Cary does not play piano on his Famous Door LP, leaving the piano bench for Ross Tompkins to fill. Instead, Cary doubles on trumpet and alto horn, provides all of the arrangements, and is responsible for one original, "What's That You're Playing." Cary blends in well with trombonist Bob Havens, both Dick Hafer and Tommy Newsom on tenor, Tompkins, bassist John Heard, and drummer Nick Fatool during this excellent set which shows the similarity between small-group swing and 1950s cool jazz. ~ Scott Yanow
