On its second studio album, BRAIN THRUST MASTERY, the Brooklyn-based alternative-rock act We Are Scientists sticks to its post-punk/New Wave guns, maintaining the energetic formula that won the band a legion of fans in the U.K. Paired down to singer/guitarist Keith Murray and bassist Chris Cain, the duo offers up 1980s-inspired anthems--see the soaring "After Hours" and the slinky, synth-heavy "Lethal Enforcer"--while also playfully saluting the dance-floor heroes Daft Punk on the fierce "Chick Lit." Though originality isn't this group's strong suit, its enthusiastic approach and punchy songcraft elevate We Are Scientists above peers such as the Killers and the Bravery, making MASTERY a highly enjoyable outing.
