  • American composer and guitarist Brian Keane and Turkish instrumentalist Omar Faruk Tekbilek continue their deliciously exotic collaboration with this album, which is titled in loose homage to Paul Bowles's novel and Bernard Bertolucci's film THE SHELTERING SKY. Seductive and mysterious, this offering finds Faruk conjuring desolate desert magic on an array of exotic flutes, lutes, guitars, synthesizers, and percussion while Keane backs him up and points the way.
  • The fully orchestrated "Kolaymi" recalls Ennio Morricone or the swooning delirium of Hong Kong pop ballads, while offbeat percussion and a soulful flute take center stage for the affecting "Bridge." Faruk's Sufi background is noticeable in the compelling rhythms of "Imaginary Traveler," which is suitable for furious, dervish-like whirling. Though the music is already deeply rooted in the rich historical past of Turkey and Egypt, Keane also brings engagingly Westernized production values, with the results capable of propelling a listener deep into the foreign deserts and marketplaces of the cinematic imagination. As with the pair's previous effort, FIRE DANCE, what is on display here is collaboration unrivaled at mixing deeply felt reverence for Middle Eastern pasts with New Age lushness and modern jazz excitement.
