  • One of the first things you might notice about BED OF ROSES is that it's produced by roots-rock hero/former Blaster Dave Alvin, who doesn't lend his talents to a project unless it's something special. The next thing you might notice is the all-star cast of musicians, which includes R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, Alvin himself, and Minus Five/Young Fresh Fellows mainman Scott McCaughey. Once you get past all this frippery, you'll get to what's really at the heart of the album; Christy McWilson's committed-but-humble singing style and memorable country-rock songwriting. If things had worked out differently, a voice and pen like McWilson's might have been a Nashville money-making machine, but she wisely chooses to slog it out on the grittier west coast Americana circuit, in support of songs like the Buddy Holly-meets-Lucinda Williams opener "Life's Little Enormities" and an effectively moody cover of Jesse Colin Young's "Darkness, Darkness."
Professional Reviews
Magnet (6-7/02, p.113) - "...Casts a 5-star Americana glow across trembling, honey-throated originals and sterling covers of Moby Grape and the Youngbloods..."

CMJ (4/8/02, p.11) - "...McWilson's unwavering, gorgeous vocals sears listeners like an unsuspecting tuna fillet in a fancy bistro kitchen..."
