This captivating, wordless picture book portrays a boy's accidental loss of his beloved stuffed monkey, the creature's ensuing tribulations and the joyous reconciliation of animal and owner. Ages 3-7. (Feb.)

PreS-Gr 2 This wordless book has a perfect blending of story line and illustration except for one double-page spread that may not be understood by children. A small boy loses his favorite stuffed monkey during a heavy rain. First a family of mice find the monkey, then a family of hedgehogs, then a large bird. Finally the monkey ends up in a fishing pond and is hooked by a man who takes the monkey to his toy hospital, where he carefully sews him up, washes and dries him, and displays him in the window. The little boy and his mother happen by the shop, and the boy recovers his lost friend. Schubert's soft watercolors, full of eye-catching detail, are wonderful. The playful mice look upset when they accidentally pull off the monkey's tail; the hedgehog mother and her babies happily curl up in the warmth of the stuffed toy; the scavenger bird wants the monkey's button eye to add to his nest's holdings of eyeglasses, false teeth etc.; and finally, the toy hospital is a delight of fascinating detail. The confusion comes from a spread in the mice's tree home: the mice undress the monkey to play with his overalls, but when the hedgehog sticks his head into their nest they unaccountably redress the monkey before blocking the doorway with his body. Nevertheless, children will care from the first pages about the plight of the boy and his monkey, and they will respond emotionally to this lovely book. The fact that Schubert accomplishes this without a single line of text is remarkable. A very special book to be shared with many children. Barbara S.
