Reviews

K-Gr 2-- In a celebration of individuality, the seven youngsters from Clive Eats Alligators (1986) and Rosie Sips Spiders (1989, both Houghton) return to amuse readers with their activities. Double-page spreads show six of them reacting to such different subjects as ``secrets,'' ``dislikes,'' and ``midnight snacks,'' while the following spread shows the remaining child's coup de grace. Clive still has an affinity for alligators, Ernie dislikes leaking boots, and Rosie has definite cowgirl potential. The illustrations add to the cheerful zaniness of the text and contribute greatly to the book's success. Lester proves adept at capturing the idiosyncrasies of childhood. While not in story format, the characters' antics will encourage children to tell stories of their own. --Lori A. Janick, Parkwood Elementary School, Pasadena, TX
