About the Author

Sextus Julius Frontius (40 - 103 AD) was a distinguished Roman soldier and bureaucrat of the late 1st century AD. He was descended from several notable Romans that included Aulus Julius Frontinus, Cornelia Africana, and Publius Cornelius Scipio. His two best known works as an author includes De aquaeductu, dealing with the aqueducts of Rome and Strategemata (Strategems) dealing with war strategy of the Roman Army. Flavius Vegetius Renatus was a high ranking Roman who lived in the 4th century. In some manuscripts he is given the title of count. Raphael of Volterra calls him a Count of Constantinople. Little is known of his life, but it is apparent from his book that he did not have extensive practical experience as a soldier. He states quite frankly that his purpose was to collect and synthesize the military customs and wisdom from ancient manuscripts and regulations that made ancient Rome great. According to his statement, his principal sources were Cato the Elder, Cornelius Celsus, Paternus, Frontinus, and the regulations and ordinances of Augustus, Trajan and Hadrian. Vincent W. Rospond received his Master's in Eastern European History from the University of Illinois as well as studying at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the MBA program at Seton Hall University. He has spent almost 20 years as an executive in the publishing and gaming industry. He started Winged Hussar Publishing, LLC (WHP) as a venture for historians to publish books and articles on lesser known periods of history and give readers access to translated historical documents. His first book for WHP is a new edition of Caesar's Commentaries of the Gallic Wars. In addition to his work at WHP, he is editor of the Journal of America's Military Past, a peered reviewed journal focusing on the people, places and things related to America's military. He currently lives at the sunny New Jersey shore with his wife, kids and dog.
