Nancy C. Whitman is professor emerita of mathematics education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she teaches courses in mathematics education and curriculum. Currently, she is studying mathematics education reform in Japan.
The students were able to develop and practice their measurement
skills, and were pleased with the stars they made. They were able
to relate the star to their cultural celebration. Many enjoyed
participating in a cooperative activity. Some realized the focus of
the lesson was on the measurement standard.
Whitman's innovative lessons use math as a bridge to Pacific and
Asian cultures. Everything is provided—background information,
lesson plans, recommendations for children's books, and
professional references—so busy teachers will be able to implement
the lessons easily and effectively. I enthusiastically recommend
this book as a way to enliven content area instruction and
celebrate students' cultural heritages.

culture was helpful. Some students asked for more lessons...
