Reviews

-In this historical overview, readers are taken on a detailed genealogical journey through the writing of those theologians, philosophers, anthropologists, psychologists and sociologists on whose shoulders the current state of the sociology of religion rests. Rooting the social scientific study of religion into works by philosophers like Vico, Hume, and Feurbach, Cipriani proceeds to illustrate how each individual man (and later woman) built on preceding intellectual frameworks for thinking about religion. The end product is an introduction to the countless theoretical insights that have contributed to this sub-discipline. . . . Cipriani's work makes its contribution as an important theoretical reference. It is well researched. Its work on the roots of sociology of religion is thorough and will be an invaluable resource. And, because this volume also cuts across disciplinary boundaries in the works covered, it will no doubt appeal to anyone interested in social scientific and theoretical approaches to religion.- --William A. Mirola, Sociology of Religion -Cipriani covers an astounding array of scholars and their thought, ranging from the classics to various European schools and traditions to newer trends and developments. Readers will appreciate the strong international and historical focus and can use this book to brush up on their knowledge of areas of scholarship that are not well known on the North American continent or go back to eras that are rarely addressed in the sociology of religion.- --Lutz Kaelber, Teaching Sociology -We owe . . . [Cipriani] thanks for introducing us to some European figures less well known on these shores, reintroducing us to the thought of many individuals we already know, reminding us of some earlier thinkers and ideas we in sociology are in danger of forgetting, and arranging this material in a narrative which suggests that the progressive flow of theories and investigations have, after all, amounted to something.- --Donald A. Nielsen, International Journal of Politics, Culture, and Society -Robert Cipriani's history of the sociology of religion begins with philosophical predecessors and works its way through the major writing of numerous nineteenth-and twentieth-century scholars. It places a great deal of valuable information between two covers.- --Anthony J. Blasi, International Journal of Politics, Culture, and Society
