George William Erskine Russell (1853-1919) was a Liberal Party politician and a relation of Lord John Russell (twice prime minister during the nineteenth century). In addition to Parliament he was considered influential in many spheres: as a prominent member of London County Council, as a respected Anglican lay reader and as a gifted writer and journalist. He made frequent contributions to the Manchester Guardian and produced several biographies of great men of his time.
