Tisa was one of more than 3000 American volunteers who fought on the side of the Republic in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). He describes the training, or lack of it, of new recruits and recalls his experiences in battle and as a historian and editor attached to the International Brigades' headquarters. This well-written book nicely integrates Tisa's diary entries into the text and provides a vivid picture of one person's experiences. Many personal narratives have been published, mostly in the years just after the war, but this is a welcome addition because of its lucid and lively narrative. Recommended for public and academic libraries. Kathleen Farago, Lakewood P.L., Ohio
