Isaacs (1837-1965) was the most famous novelist of the Hispanic American Romantic literary movement, publishing 800 copies of Maria, his first novel, in 1867. Through the Spanish reading of Carlos Cabrera, the listener will relive the story of Efrain, who returns from school in Bogot  to his house in the Cauca valley, a rural property at the base of the central mountain range. There he finds Maria, the daughter of a friend of his father, whose parents have died. Efrain and Maria fall in love at first sight and embark on a platonic romance, but then he is sent to London to finish his medical studies. His parents are afraid that their relationship will affect Maria, who suffers from the same disease that caused her mother's death. While Efrain is away, a friend of the family, Carlos, asks for her hand in marriage. The richness of the autobiographical elements makes the novel even more valuable. This audiocassette is useful for Spanish II and upper levels in high school and university programs.ÄGloria S. Castillo-Potts, Darien, GA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
