Reviews

Praise for News from Berlin
"A compelling portrait of love, loss and regret."--Lucy Popescu, The Independent on Sunday
"A masterclass in how less can be more, packed full of atmosphere, emotion and philosophical debate." --Kathy Stephenson, Daily Mail
"It's not surprising to learn that de Kat is also a poet; his linguistic gifts are evident. This is a lovely novel, at once psychological and historical, written in spare, elegant prose and beautifully translated."
--Forward
"This brief novel by Otto de Kat is a masterpiece of literary craft and concision; sparse, beautiful, and hugely affecting."--The Daily Mail
"This clever novel confounds expectations, repeatedly wrong-footing the reader as it follows a Dutch family spread across war-torn Europe . . . Key to the book's dreamlike power is its meditation on the idea that the past continues to resonate in the present and that 'forgetting is the enemy of happiness.'"
--Jane Housham, Guardian

"This is a short novel, beautifully written and carefully structured. The prose is simple and moving and credit must go to the translator (Laura Watkinson) as well as to the writer for the powerful and subtle style. The characters are compelling, emerging through the mist of memory and strong feeling. The settings of war-time Germany and post-war Holland are vividly present. The novel is in reality compelling, compassionate and deeply felt. It repays a slow and thoughtful reading."--Shiny New Books
