Y.C. Pan was born in Taiwan under Japanese occupation in 1935. He emigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1962 and enrolled at the University of Toronto. After working as an economist, Pan embarked on a career with the government and the Canadian International Development Agency.
The "Stone Monkey" fable is based on his recollections as a young parent telling stories to his three growing children who were always his wide-eyed audience.
Pan's forthcoming memoir, to be published in Spring 2010 by Bayeux Arts, recounts friendship, development, and change throughout Asia and Eastern Europe over the last forty years.
