About the Author

DR AXEL NIESTLE has been a private researcher of Second World War military history, especially the Battle of the Atlantic, for more than thirty years. Among his numerous publications on the subject are illustrated technical monographs on Type VIIC and Type IXC U-boats.

Reviews

"...a greatly expanded revision of the author's original 1998 work on the subject. Niestl uses recently declassified documents and other newly found information, including examinations of actual wrecks, to correct the occasional errors in the original, some based on incorrect official information, and add details of many additional sinkings, so that the fate of only 63 U-boats remains unknown. Although his textual treatment is short, Niestl manages to make a number of important points, perhaps most notably that more detailed research has revealed that mines were far more effective in sinking submarines than had been believed. Information on sinkings is in tabular form, supplemented by notes which are often quite informative. This is a work that is primarily for the serious student of naval operations, and particularly submarine warfare."-- "StrategyPage"
