About the Author

JOHN ANDREW GALLAGHER is an independent director and screenwriter in New York City. He has had articles published in Rolling Stone, Milimeter, Films in Review, Starlog, American Classic Screen, Fangoria, Cinemacabre, and The Velvet Light Trap.

Reviews

Gallagher, himself a director and screenwriter, has interviewed an eclectic admixture of 21 directors ranging from thewell-known (Francois Truffaut, Wim Wenders, John Avildsen) through the lesser-known (Abel Ferrara, James Glickenhaus, and semi-schlockmeisters like Menahem Golan). His selection criteria are unstated. He sometimes interviewed his subjects more than once and at widely divergent times; others, e.g., Michael Cimino, were interviewed after only one or two films, when the shape of their careers had not yet become clear. There is more anecdotal material here than insights into the art of film directing, but some information, e.g., complete filmographies, would be hard to find elsewhere.-- Roy Liebman, California State Univ. Lib., Los Angeles
