Gr 3-7-In this informative and interesting set, the clear narration by Trevor Nichols and Katinka Wolf is enhanced by background music which emphasizes the mood of each biographical sketch. Nine famous people are discussed: Christopher Columbus, Queen Elizabeth I, William Shakespeare, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Lord Nelson, Charles Darwin, Florence Nightingale, Abraham Lincoln and Anne Frank. While the producers are overly enthusiastic in describing these individuals as heroes and heroines, they clearly are people of significance with important lessons for today's students. A great deal of significant information is included about each figure as well as personal details that make them more accessible to students. For example, Mozart had an unhappy childhood because he could not do the ordinary activities that most children enjoy. At times, the narrations indulge in details that may be misleading. For example, Lincoln didn't fight the Civil War just to end slavery, but that is what uninformed listeners might assume. The organization of these biographies is questionable. Figures are presented in chronological order until Florence Nightingale, who is presented before Abraham Lincoln even though he was born 11 years before she was and predeceased her by 45 years. These quibbles aside, this interesting audiobook will inspire further study and is a good way to introduce youngsters to these important historical figures.-Edith Ching, St. Albans School, Washington, DC Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
