Reviews

"By blending spat-out obscenities with reflections on Kant and Kafka, he has created a horribly engaging first-person voice: an intelligent, cultured man, coarsened by a lifetime of slights. (...) Definitely not for the faint-hearted."-Julius Purcell, Financial Times; "The Faint-hearted Bolshevik is a quick, surprising read, moving from great (superficial) vulgarity to unexpected refinement... a nice little piece of work." -Michael Orthofer, The Complete Review; "... the limpid feeling the novel conveys, with many passages that could hardly have a more precise form, a more exact and inescapable beauty. The Faint-hearted Bolshevik is a bitter story but, at the same time, an enjoyable tale, for the author has masterfully used his skills, which are quite a few, to avoid any slip-up toward the sentimental ... But one musn't be misled by that playful aspect, for it is only an outer layer - however well thought and carried out. There is much more and much more important beneath it: discovery of the other and of love, the knowledge grief brings, the conquest of remembrance, the realization that 'a man is no more than the pieces of himself he's given up in sacrifice for others'. These pages are witness to a confirmation too: that of a novelist, an excellent writer."-Ricardo Senabre, ABC; "Silva shows two characteristics of the seasoned writer. One is his skill drawing the main character's personality ... The second one is that of the careful rhythm in his writing, dynamic and at the same time restrained."-Gonzalo Garcia-Pin, La Razon; "Silva is a good writer. His dialogues, which include the colloquial formulae without overusing it, are really sharp, with an excellent knowledge and usage of the right turn of phrase."-Ricardo Senabre, El Cultural
