About the Author

Naomi Mitchison [1897-1999] was a literary phenomenon. Tireless in her writing, and unafraid and often highly unconventional in her opinions, she left an extraordinary legacy. The Naomi Mitchison Library publishes her most significant works of fiction and biography, as well as background material and commentary. Moira Burgess is a novelist, short story writer and literary historian, born in Campbeltown, Argyll, and now living in Glasgow. As well as her non-fiction writing, she has published two novels, The Day Before Tomorrow (1971, reprinted 2009) and Speak, Adam (published in 1987 as A Rumour of Strangers, reprinted 2009) and, in 2010, The South Side: Three Glasgow Novellas.

Reviews

'It has been a pleasure to read this collection, not least because Mitchison brings to her observations a rare duality of vision: the outsider's detachment and the insider's engagement. She took in everything, and no detail was spared, however irrelevant to her intended readership, which certainly wasn't local.' We see the community at work and at play ... an illuminating set of little pictures of life in a West Highland community before its old - and comfortably narrow - values were engulfed.' Angus Martin, The Kintyre Magazine, Number 67, Spring 2010
