Reviews

"Rousing good stuff." -- Sacramento Bee"Entertaining. . . . Dietrich seamlessly blends historical figures such as Napoleon and Toussaint L'Ouverture, the liberator of Haiti, with fictional characters like Gage's nemesis, "renegade secret policeman" Leon Martel, in this amusing swashbuckler." -- Publishers Weekly"Dietrich seamlessly blends historical fact with fiction. . . . [He] also has a knack for making the world of 1803 come alive." -- Associated Press"The Emerald Storm is a whirl of adventure, international diplomacy and vivid political commentary. . . . A wonderful romp through a complicated period of history." -- Bellingham Herald

In his fifth adventure, treasure hunter Ethan Gage departs Paris in search of Aztec riches lost centuries ago in the Caribbean. Napoleon, his sometimes patron, manages to complicate the agenda, and Ethan, who always finds something but rarely gets to keep it, embroils himself in the Haitian revolution. An off-season hurricane and conflicts between the French and the British insert additional action. Historian Dietrich provides a richly accurate background, placing Ethan in the sugar isles just as major powers are beginning to evaluate the evils of slavery. John Pruden, a welcome new narrator for this series, does a fine job of portraying the self-deprecating swashbuckler. VERDICT Fast paced and well written, this Storm will be welcomed by those who love adventure fiction of any period or historicals set in the Napoleonic era. ["Written with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Dietrich's...novel of high adventure is meant to be enjoyed and not critiqued," read the review of the HarperCollins hc, LJ 4/15/12.-Ed.]-Janet Martin, Southern Pines P.L., NC (c) Copyright 2012.
