Born and raised in New York City, Mark Shaw was mentored by legendary creative director Alexey Brodovitch before becoming one of the most sought-after photographers in the world. Shooting primarily for Life magazine, from 1952 to 1968, Shaw had subjects that ranged from the young Audrey Hepburn and the pre-Velvet Underground Nico to the Kennedys before and during their presidential fame.
"Dior Glamour is a glorious record...Shaw didn't just shoot
the gorgeous clothes but caught the workings of the house." Wall
Street Journal "Demonstrating an unrehearsed fluidity--an
honesty--Dior Glamour explores the photographer's work,
chronicling his experience with Christian Dior. The era of 1952 to
1962 called for a sort of sweet beauty--a pretty elegance--to
reinvigorate the spirit of the world. Shaw embraced his task of
communicating Dior's message with aplomb, forever captivating this
moment of glamour." Quest Magazine "...relish the ultimate
romance of the creations of fashion's iconic standard-bearer,
Christian Dior....readers are treated to the phenomenal art that is
truly Christian Dior. It's what all the best coffee tables will be
wearing this fall." Beverly Drive
"A rare look into the world of Christian Dior...a luxurious volume
presenting a decade of dazzling Dior haute Couture photography by
the legendary Mark Shaw in the 1950's. Dior Glamour contains
black-and-white and color (including some of the very first fashion
photographs ever shot in color)." Yatzer "As new book, Dior
Glamour reveals, not everything Shaw photographed had celebrity at
its heart. The lavish volume documents the post-war heyday of
French fashion house and includes rare images of Christian Dior
himself, working behind the scenes." Wordpress "Behind-the-scenes
fittings, dazzling frothy gowns--Mark Shaw's images offer an
intimate peek into a lush decade of Parisian Haute Couture."
Veranda Magazine "Mark Shaw's photographs serve as an unrivaled
source of such great fashion moments during the career of a fashion
master, Christian Dior. Even though the photos span a mere 10 years
while Mr. Shaw covered Dior for Life magazine, the body of work is
breathtaking on so many planes. Dior Glamour must be appreciated
regarding both its demonstration of photographic skill and its
manner of fashion coverage. The reader will be or should be
astounded at the exquisite quality of the photos as well as the
even more astounding quality of the clothes. The exquisite
physicality of this book is as grand as the subject matter, and
that is stated without any exaggeration. If you are fan of the
house, a fan of photography, or a fan of the legacy of fashion,
rush out and buy this for yourself and gift it to those who will
cherish it. It was an honor and pleasure to have been able to
review and possess such a fine volume of fashion history made
possible by the amazingly talented Mark Shaw." New York Journal of
Books "...see some of his most gorgeous work...in which he captures
the chic, unforgettable Dior look." Vanity Fair
