About the Author

Sue Graves has taught for thirty years in Cheshire schools. She has been writing for more than ten years and has written well over a hundred books for children and young adults. "Nearly everyone loves computer games. They are popular with all age groups - especially young adults. but i've often thought it would be amazing to play a computer game for real. To be in on the action would be the best experience ever! That's why I wrote these stories. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I've enjoyed writing them for you."

Reviews

K-Gr 3-A young African-American boy notices the inequities inherent in segregation in this story (Candlewick, 2012) by Michael S. Bandy and Eric Stein. He is especially struck by the drinking fountains-one for whites only, one for coloreds only. Tony Fragale gives voice to this first-person narrative as the boy becomes increasingly focused on what the "white water" must taste like. He finally devises a plan to find out, only to discover that both fountains are fed by the same pipe. This realization inspires him to follow his dreams and let no preconceived notions stand in his way. Shadra Strickland's watercolor illustrations are scanned as the story, inspired by true events, is read. Occasional music and minor sound effects are added. This tale will provide insight for young viewers into daily life before the civil rights movement and a greater understanding of the necessity for change.-Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary, Federal Way, WA (c) Copyright 2012.
