About the Author

John Elder, who has taught at Middlebury College since 1973 and now holds a split appointment as Stewart Professor of English and Environmental Studies, is known for his wonderful teaching and for his critical work on nature writing. He is the author most recently of Reading the Mountains of Home and has edited an encyclopedia, American Nature Writers, and (with Robert Finch) The Norton Anthology of Nature Writing. He lives with his family in Bristol, Vermont. Editor, Robin MacArthur, is a third-generation Vermonter from Marlboro who has been studying Vermont-based fiction (and writing her own) since she left for college at eighteen. She has an MFA in Fiction from Vermont College of Fine Arts; her essays and stories about Vermont have appeared in Orion, Shenandoah, Hunger Mountain and Alaska Quarterly.

Reviews

The mysteries of geography are profound, as is my deep affinity for the fiction, people, landscape and politics of Vermont. Often, Vermont reminds me of a concentrated, Eastern brand of Montana, though obviously it is only its own place. It should come as no surprise that these writings are as rich and dense and hard and lovely as is the state itself. -- Rick Bass, author of All the Land to Hold Us
