Reviews

Gr 7-10-Olsen's sequel (2012) to Envy (2011, both Sterling) is a beguiling, thrilling murder mystery. Set in Port Gamble, Washington, the story begins with the murder of a British foreign exchange student, Olivia Grant, while at Brianna Connor's Halloween party. The plot and characters are revealed as the events of the murder are discussed and investigated, unraveling slowly, each dialogue revealing a new twist, a different motive, and a new suspect. Told from the omniscient point of view, there are chilling moments, as when Olivia describes her attack as she is dying, and when the killer's feelings are described after the murder. The novel's events are seen through the eyes of many of the well-developed teenage characters-spoiled and insensitive Brianna Connors; her submissive boyfriend, Drew Marchello; Olivia's stoic roommate, Beth Lee; self-centered Starla Larsen; and Hayley and Taylor Ryan, twins who possess both psychic abilities and analytical instincts-and some adults. Julia Whelan narrates with small voice variations for each character. The theme of jealousy and envy is appropriate for a teen audience.-Cynthia Grabke, formerly McCormack Middle School, Dorchester, MA (c) Copyright 2013.
