This two-disc set isn’t a soundtrack to AMC’s impeccably styled series -- and it shows. Mad Men: A Musical Companion (1960-1965) collects some of those years’ best examples of vocal pop and rock & roll, with a little bit of soul, bossa nova, and jazz thrown in for good measure. This is a solid, enjoyable collection; it’s impossible to call a collection that bridges Ricky Nelson's “Travelin’ Man,” Marvin Gaye's “Ain’t That Peculiar,” and Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd's “Desafinado” bad. However, it doesn’t have the inspired spark of the show’s musical choices, which blend Bob Dylan, the Decemberists, and Perry Como into a seamless reflection of the seismic cultural shifts of the Mad Men era. The collection does include a few slightly offbeat choices, such as Lloyd Price's “Lady Luck” and Brook Benton's “Frankie & Johnny,” along with more expected tracks like Tom Jones' “It’s Not Unusual,” Sonny & Cher's “I Got You Babe,” and Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs' “Wooly Bully.” It’s hard to fault Mad Men: A Musical Companion (1960-1965)'s quality, but the set feels more like an oldies collection with Don Draper on the cover than an evocation of the show’s essence.
